Doing visuals for 15 years …

I have recently found a joy in viewing my old productions and suddently realised that I have been releasing demos and intros (audio and visual applications) for more than 15 years.

My first real production was called Nope! and was released at The Party 1995. The Party was the first real big computer party. It had more than 3.000 visitors and occasionally rave parties in the sleeping hall. I was 15 at the time and used Pascal as primary programming language spiced up with inline assembly.

I enhanced my coding skills over the year and came back at The Party 1996 with my first 3D and 2D vector routines. Even though three coders are credited in the demo - I remember pulling several all-nighters alone to finish the production. For it’s time and my age; I think it’s quite cute :-)

In 1997 a group of my friends and I attended a venue called The Copenhagen Party. It was held in a school near Copenhagen and was heavily sponsored by Commodore and Betafon. We won a few competitions - one of them the main compeition with the demo shown in the below youtube.

I joined the international group called ACiD. Together with graphicians and musicians from their network I created a demo for the north american party Spring Break in 1998. The demo was cleverly named “Out of sight, out of mind” and won the competition.

Also that year, I did my first 64kb intro. This was a small application with generated sounds and hand drawn graphics - and VERY shiny red 2D-effects. It competed at a local computer party near Randers called Summer Encounter. Main programming and visual design was done by me at the party place.

In a the christmas break between semesters at university I coded Bewahren sie ruhe on my dads home PC in the living room. It was my final DOS release and has compressed sounds, texture generation and other (for its time) fancy technology. I later ported the source to Windows for future archival :-)

I won my first 64kb intro competition at Scene Event 2000 in Randers with the intro Together. It was a nicely designed intro featuring music made by the later famous demo coder Matt Svoboda (aka. Smash of Fairlight).

I formed my own group in 2001 together with some local friends - we released a total of one (1) demos. It was shown at TRSAC in Copenhagen in 2001 and was coded in C++ on Windows using OpenGL.

I visited my second foreign party in Germany 2002 - it was Mekka Symposium held in legendary Fallingbostel. The demo is black/white with red constrasts - in addition it had a very industrial/noise sound track which spiced everything up at the party place :-)

2002 - Yurination by NANV

Also in 2002 - I played around with mixing videos with 3D OpenGL technology. The result was a VJ-like experience named Goalization. It was shown at TMD 2002 held in Skive, Denmark.

Due to studies and personal life I put programming on hold for a couple of years and only did sporadic releases.

I did my first and only java demo in 2004. It ran on my cell phone nicely and featured nice graphics by Mogens and some blipblops by Christian. It was tested on Nokia 6230, 6100 and 3100.

Martin picked me up in 2007 and we did a funky demo called Weird in a strange way. It features primitive effects but effectful timing. We didn’t win anything but it was entered in the Breakpoint 2007 competition in Bingen am Rhein, Germany.

I also helped Martin with his 4kb intro for Assembly 2007 held in Helsinki, Finland. My assistance was primarily to provide a software synthesizer and a tracker. So, I build both and gave it to him.

A group of danes grouped in a few cars and went to Norway in july 2008 to visit the newly founded party Solskogen. To support the party we did a fast made release which, by accident, won the PC Demo competition at the place. It featured awesome drum and bass music by Christian (previously released at Breakpoint) and some nice hand drawn pictures by Mogens. Code and synchronisation was done by me - more or less over night.

We came back the following year where I did a more serious demo together with ambient musician Klaus Lunde aka Xerxes. Xerxes had given a live show at Breakpoint at which point I decided to contact him about using his music for this upcoming release. The demo ranked 2nd at Solskogen 2009.

Also in 2009, I did a small 64 kb intro together with one of my favorite Danish musicians - Christian. It ranked 3rd at Breakpoint demo party held in Bingen am Rhein, Germany.

2009 - Squaredance by Loonies

My latest release was made for my Asus EEE PC and released at Breakpoint 2010 as PC 64KB intro. It was coded in C++ and limited to the capabilities supported by the low-end netbook that I brought to the party place. Most the entry was coded over-night and the whole package lasts less than a minute :-) Music is by Klaus Lunde aka Xerxes.

This brings me to the end of this walk down the memory lane. The above listing is not a complete list of all the stuff I’ve done over the years.
