How do you make a demo?

I’ve seen a multitude of tutorials on how to code actual demo effects; but I’ve never seen a clear article on the creative process that generates the demos. Here is one!

In todays post I’d like to give you all a short insight in my creative process of making demos for competiting at parties. I suspect that my way isn’t the ideal way, however it works for me and my busy schedule.

Basicly the setup is as follows:

  1. Code some basic effects
  2. Find a mood that you’d like for the demo (angry, sad, happy, chill, etc)
  3. Hook up with a musician that you think’ll fit the mood
  4. Listen to the music and imagine the flow of the demo
  5. Build effects or visual sequences
  6. Get input from graphicians
  7. Re-iterate the code untill satisfied
  8. Release demo
  9. Profit

My busy schedule and my personality makes it preferable for me to work more or less solo. The majority of the creative process happens inside my head and is expressed via my fingers. Music and graphics could be ready made; as it is easier for me to create the overall visual flow and impression without having inputs from autonomous graphicians or musicians. Most of my releases are a result of this process.

Working in teams is great, but only if you have the time. In a team I also find it important that one sole person takes the overall role as “master of creativity”. This means that everyone is able to give input but one person should be responsible. I’ve only done few releases in teams; one of them was Weird in a strange way. In this production Maytz took the lead and hooked my code up with 3d, visuals from Farfar and Loft.
